Kogl - Srednje Slovenske Gorice -  PODRAVJE REGION

Tucked in the northeast corner of Slovenia, bordering Hungary and Croatia and not too far from Austria, the Kogl estate and vineyard is situated 900 feet above sea level, facing the southern side of the Drava River valley. In a region filled with history, the Kogl estate dates back to 1542. The name of the village near the estate, Velika Nedelja, translates as “Easter Sunday,” named to honor the Crusaders who passed through this area in the Middle Ages. The present structure dates to the early 19th century, and appears on a map made in 1820 that was included in a church chronicle written in 1836. The winemaking tradition was reestablished in 1983, when the estate, which had been abandoned for decades, was purchased by the Svetko family and renovation of buildings and vineyards began.

Specializing in white wines, Kogl utilizes a combination of classical methods and new technology in his winemaking. Mixing traditional barrel aging and the newer style utilizing stainless steel tanks with controlled fermentation, Kogl carefully crafts each wine to their exacting specifications. Red wines and some premium dessert wines are nurtured using the barrique method. The region has a particularly good climate for growing, sitting between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Using their proprietary techniques and taking full advantage of the excellent growing conditions, Kogl creates a highly recognizable and unique selection of wines.

Kogl has 25,200 planted vines of the following varietals: Sipon, Chardonnay, Renski Rizling, Kerner, Muscat Otonel, Sauvignon, Yellow Muscat, Laski Rizling, Pinot Gris, Traminer, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Having recently started production of their first reds, they now produce now roughly 85% white and 15% red. Specialties of Kogl cellars are young, fresh varietal wines and also predicate wines such as: Late Harvest, Select, Berry Select, Dry Berry Select and Ice Wine.
